While a picture may be worth a thousand words, I've always found that the story behind the image adds a layer of excitement. For me, the journey to the destination is where the real adventure lies. It's all about the joy and thrill of the journey itself! The anticipation, the unexpected discoveries, and the sense of accomplishment at each step make the journey as thrilling as the destination.
Take the image at the top of this page. It is a panoramic view taken from the top of McConnel Ridge, also known as Yates Mountain. The lake at the bottom is Barrier Lake, and the mountain at the centre is Mount Baldy. The peaks behind Mount Baldy are, from left to right, Old Baldy Peak, Kananaskis Peak and Wasootch Peak, and the snow-covered mountain to the right is Mary Barclay's Mountain. I used a Nikon Z5, with a 20mm F/1.8G lens, 1/250 exposure time, F/6.3 and ISO 100. I love the Canadian Rockies.
The super-abbreviated story behind the picture starts with my son asking me to try a sunset hike. "Besides the bears and finding the route, now I have to worry about hiking in the dark." We headed to the wrong location before the hike had even started. We were hoping for a view where the sun hides behind the mountains, but we got the wrong orientation, as the top was facing east. It was at the beginning of May, 24 degrees Celsius, but the lake was partially frozen. We got to talk about school, huff & puff all the way to the top. Say hello to other hikers on the trail and take pictures of the moon, too.
Even with these few details, you’ll get a taste of the adventure we experienced! We both completely loved the pictures we captured, and whenever we see them, they bring back such vivid memories of that hike! I can’t wait to share the detailed story of this hike with you in another post!
